Profile
Matthew Metzger
Education
Matthew Metzger's recent solo exhibition at The Renaissance Society, titled Heirloom concluded with a full monograph of the same name published in 2022. Other exhibitions include Coda, a solo exhibition of new work in 2023 at Magenta Plains, New York, The Freedom Principle, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; and The Works, Fondation CAB, Brussels; and is represented by Regards, Chicago. Often working in the intersection of painting, sound, and installation, Metzger's work takes a critical approach to Abstraction both as a genre of art making but also holding a nasty yet fascinating influence on culture and the self. Media, finance, education, and even death use abstraction to ensure the success of systems of influence and power, producing an immense and perfect corporate trompe l’oeil. In turn, Metzger searches for ways to make abstraction vulnerable through a delicate, tense studio practice that often privileges the razor blade over the brush.
