Therese Quinn and collaborators Erica Meiners (Northeastern Illinois University), Matthew Yasuoka (UIC) and Jose Luis Benavides (UIC) received a Civic Engagement Research Fund Award for Illinois Deaths in Custody Project: An Analysis of Online Reporting and Eulogizing.
According to 2014 investigative reporting approximately 80 to 100 people die in Illinois prisons each year. When jails, work camps and immigration detention centers are included, this number jumps higher. However, not only is it challenging to get information about these deaths, even for family members, deciphering the released information is often difficult.
