Associate Professor of Art History Esra Akcan was just named the Rising Star Researcher of the Year at UIC for her scholarly accomplishments.
Dr. Akcan is an architect and architectural historian who has established a name in Turkish language publications and now is recontextualizing ideas of design and urban development in a global context. Her coauthored work on the history of the 20th century Turkish architecture was called "unexpectedly fascinating" and "happily jargon-free" by the leading English-language newspaper in Turkey. Her solo book, Architecture in Translation: Germany, Turkey, and the Modern House, was described by distinguished scholars in her field as "path-breaking" by offering a new way to understand the global movement of culture that extends the notion of translation beyond language to visual fields.
Esra Akcan, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Art History, Architecture, Design and the Arts.
