The University of Illinois at Chicago's Museum and Exhibition Studies program (MUSE) is pleased to announce a new series of public programs organized in conjunction with the RE: PUBLICS exhibition at The 5th Floor Gallery.
RE: PUBLICS is an exhibition emerging from a Museum and Exhibition Studies seminar titled “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Public Engagement* *But Were Afraid to Ask" led by Jen Delos Reyes, a creative laborer, educator, radical community arts organizer, and author.

The exhibition Realities was created to highlight students at UIC and give them a creative outlet to tell their stories. As museum and gallery spaces are changing, it was our goal to represent the community we serve while making the exhibition as accessible as possible. This program will give guests the opportunity to tell their own stories just like the students whose work is featured in the exhibition. Their artwork will be hung on the walls of the gallery along side the photographs as the exhibition's participatory component.
Searching for Queerness in Hull-House: A Virtual Tour & Discussion

Following the "Realities" opening reception and program, there will be virtual tour and discussion in the GSC community lounge. Peer into Jane Addams' personal life and learn why Hull-House has been called Chicago's queerest home.

This workshop aims to demonstrate the various ways in which a universally owned and frequently discarded object, such as a t-shirt, may be easily repurposed into useful and reusable everyday items which work to reduce our dependence on disposable products which harm the environment. Through guided discussions on subjects such as Climate Change and The Green New Deal Resolution, this workshop encourages participants to share their viewpoints in a constructive and crafting space!

A free, public clothing exchange on campus. People are encouraged to bring items they would like to donate, hopefully ending the night with new finds to take home with them.

A Nameless Familiar: Audio Tour

A Nameless Familiar, the second of two UIC MFA Thesis Exhibition is proud to invite you to its one night Audio Tour. This audio tour will give you a detailed description of the art pieces displayed, as well as, audio from the artists themselves. The tour is meant to challenge your comprehension of loss, memory, and transformation through audio. Can art make you feel different by stimulating a new sense? Come take the tour and find out!

The Quest for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie

Part chocolate chip cookie tutorial, part discussion, this program will explore our emotional attachment to certain foods and how making and sharing food is a reciprocal exchange. Participants will be invited to share food-associated memories while learning about program facilitator, Nina's, quest to perfect the chocolate chip cookie. Chocolate chip cookies will be provided.
Is Anything Natural? A Look At Where Food Comes From

This program is an hour long crash course of plant domestication, gene manipulation, and the evolution of grocery stores. We will be analyzing our relationship with plants and how food culture is constantly changing. No prior knowledge about plants required!

An Introduction to “Aztec/Mexica Dance” In Cuicatl In Xochitl

Through this overview of Mexica/Aztec ceremonies, we will explore one traditional practice still used today, dating back to our ancestors. Although song and dance have always gone hand in hand in these traditional spaces, our workshop will focus on connecting with our positive intentions through traditional dance. A basic first lesson sets you up to enter a circle of gratitude, created by all who share the space. The Huhuetl drum then personifies the beating heart, cycling continuous energy as we all partake in a representation of a Mexica/Aztec dance ceremony.
What Does the Color Red Mean to You?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the long history of cochineal, an insect indigenous to the Americas that produces a brilliant red dye. Guests will make cochineal pigment, have fun painting, and engage in dialogue about the cultural significance of the color red in the Americas and beyond.

Why Should I Say Your Name Correctly?

Come engage in a conversational workshop that enhances dialogue about a person's name and its significance in building positive social engagement and cultural sensitivity. After discussing the personal and cultural importance of names, participants employ embroidery and sewing processes to create original artwork that further investigates our names and ourselves.

Breaking Pita
The Syrian Community Network will be joined by leaders of the National Cambodian Heritage Museum as well as other museum professionals to share a Syrian-style meal and discuss possibilities the creation of Chicagos newest cultural center. With each traditional dish representing an idea or challenge, we will discuss reflecting on experiences and new possibilities. This is the first of a series of dinners to demonstrate, share, and taste the values, traditions, and culture of the Syrian people. The 5th Floor is located at 400 South Peoria Street, in the same building which houses Gallery 400 on the east side of campus. Admission to the exhibition and its programs is free. The gallery has open hours on Fridays from 1pm–6pm, and public events on Thursdays from 5:30-7:45 pm. Join us for the exhibition reception on March 22 from 6pm–8pm.
