Catherine Becker is a historian of South Asian art and architecture. Her first book Shifting Stones, Shaping the Past: Sculpture from the Buddhist Stupas of Andhra Pradesh (forthcoming, Oxford University Press) investigates the production and use of Buddhist art in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh from the second century of the Common Era to the present. A current research project examines the material remains of artistic and cultural exchange between Buddhist communities in Andhra Pradesh and Sri Lanka during the early centuries of the Common Era. Her second book-length project documents and analyzes India’s spectacular son-et-lumière shows, which overlay the monuments of India’s past with markers of modernity, such as electricity and Bollywood showmanship.
