Advising:

Make an appointment to see your Faculty Advisor or the Director of Graduate Studies for questions or concerns related to the curriculum. Each one of you will be assigned a faculty advisor. Please arrange to meet with your advisor every two or three weeks.

Time Limitations:

The MFA in the School of Art & Art History is a two year, full time program. It is expected that you complete the program in that time frame, graduating in May of your second year. If something takes place that prevents this, it is important to discuss this with the Director of Graduate Studies and your faculty advisor.

Course Work:

The MFA requires 64 credit hours. The courses for which you register are outlined below. Each semester all students must register for those courses as well as a section of ART 520: Seminar in Contemporary Theory for a total of 16 hours. The topics and instructors for this vary every semester. (With advance permission, students may be able to substitute another course for ART 520 one time only.)
All students are also required to complete 12 hours of electives. These courses must be at the 400 level or above and can be outside of the School of Art and Art History.
Students who want to observe and learn from faculty are able to enroll in a teaching practicum. The course number is ART 500, please see the course description sent along with this letter. The course is offered for two optional credit hours that are not interchangeable with any of the required credits hours described below.

Registration Process:

It is important to create an enterprise ID and password as well as netid and password. In order to obtain any departmental approvals and permissions to register, Contact Susanne Uslenghi at susl@uic.edu and CC Jen Delos Reyes

International Students:

The Office of International Services (OIS) places a SEVIS hold on the account of all new international students. Registration for all classes is blocked until you visit the OIS and they remove the hold. OIS is located in the Student Services Building (SSB) Suite 2160.  http://www.ois.uic.edu/

All new international students are strongly encouraged to attend the University’s orientation to familiarize themselves with their immigration status and benefits. All new international students are assessed a one time “Orientation fee” by OIS. This fee does not need to be paid by the student prior to their arrival at UIC. The fee will be reflected on the tuition and fee statement following the completion of registration for the first semester. International students must contact OIS if they do not intend to enroll or if they enroll less than full time. This must be done prior to the start of each semester.

Financial Aid information:
